Weekly Energy News Recap & Forecast for Restaurants

September 15, 2025 | 3 Minute Read

Key Market Updates

  • Natural Gas Prices Remain Low: Natural gas prices in the Northwest U.S. have hit historic lows in 2025, with the key Northwest Sumas hub averaging just $1.59/MMBtu through August. June saw a record low of $0.56/MMBtu. This is great news for restaurants using natural gas for cooking and heating, as it could translate to lower utility bills.

  • Restaurant Menu Prices Rising: Despite lower natural gas prices, overall inflation continues to affect the restaurant industry. Menu prices rose 0.3% in August, continuing a seven-month trend of steady increases. Year-over-year, prices for food away from home are up 3.9%.

  • Energy Costs a Factor: Rising energy costs are a contributing factor to menu price inflation. Energy prices rose 0.7% in August, with gasoline up 1.9%. This volatility highlights the importance of managing energy costs effectively.

Forecast & Recommendations

  • Natural Gas: Expect continued low natural gas prices in the short term, providing some relief on utility bills. However, the EIA forecasts a record U.S. natural gas consumption in 2025, which could lead to price increases in the long run.

  • Electricity: Electricity prices are more volatile, especially in deregulated markets. For example, in Texas, the average commercial electricity rate is 9.14¢/kWh, but the lowest available rate is 5.77¢/kWh. This shows the significant savings potential in these markets.
