Weekly Energy Market Recap

This past week saw a notable increase in natural gas prices, a key driver of overall energy costs for restaurants. The Henry Hub spot price, a national benchmark, rose to $3.24 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), a significant jump of 36 cents from the previous week. Futures markets are also pointing towards sustained higher prices, with the November 2025 contract settling at $3.476/MMBtu [1].

Electricity prices showed significant regional volatility. The Mid-Atlantic region experienced a sharp increase of nearly 75% to $100.01 per megawatt-hour (MWh), while prices in Louisiana and the Southwest saw declines. This regional variation highlights the importance of understanding your local energy market dynamics [2].

Winter 2025-2026 Energy Outlook

As we look ahead to the winter heating season, several key factors will influence energy prices. Geopolitical tensions and competition for global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies continue to exert upward pressure on prices. However, there are also stabilizing factors at play.

U.S. natural gas storage levels are currently healthy, sitting 5% above the five-year average [1]. This provides a cushion against potential price spikes during cold snaps. Additionally, the UK’s National Electricity System Operator is forecasting a strong supply margin for the winter, the highest since 2019, which should help ensure grid stability. Strong nuclear output from France is also expected to support the European grid, which can have a ripple effect on global energy markets [3].

While the overall outlook suggests adequate supply, restaurants should remain prepared for price volatility driven by weather and global events.

Energy Management Tip of the Week: Conduct an Energy Audit

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to managing your restaurant’s energy costs. An energy audit is a comprehensive assessment of your facility’s energy use that identifies opportunities for savings. Many utility companies offer free or low-cost audits for their commercial customers.

An audit can help you pinpoint energy-intensive systems and develop a strategy for high-impact upgrades, such as installing ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, switching to LED lighting, or implementing smart HVAC controls. These upgrades can lead to significant long-term cost reductions and improve your restaurant’s sustainability [4].
